The market

What is different about San Francisco

Bay Area clients tend to have the strongest internal engineering of any market we work in. Engagements here are rarely about capability and usually about focus: an internal team that is fully committed to the roadmap and a time-boxed bet that needs to be tested without derailing it.

That shapes what good looks like. The work must land in their conventions, pass their review standards, and be handed over cleanly — a squad that produces something the internal team will not adopt has produced nothing.

California privacy law is also the strictest in the country, and CPRA obligations apply to a lot of companies who assume they are exempt. We treat data minimization and deletion paths as design constraints rather than as a legal review item.

What it changes

How that shapes the work

Local context is only worth writing down if it changes a decision. These are the ones it changes here.

Adoption is the deliverable

Code the internal team will not maintain is waste however good it is. We work in their stack, their conventions and their review process, or we say up front that we should not take the work.

CPRA applies more broadly than people expect

The thresholds catch mid-sized companies routinely. Deletion, correction and opt-out paths are cheaper designed in than retrofitted, and retrofitting them is most of a quarter.

Time-boxed bets, not open-ended squads

The engagements that work here are scoped to answer a question by a date. Open-ended capacity is usually better served by hiring.

Regulation

What comes up disproportionately here

Not an exhaustive list of what applies to you — the regimes that appear more often in this market than elsewhere, and that we therefore design against by default.
  • CCPA/CPRA
  • SOC 2
  • HIPAA where health data is involved
