The hardest small thing in design

A logo has to be distinctive, appropriate, legible at any size, reproducible in one color, and still look right in ten years. Most fail on at least two.

Overview

Logo design is deceptively difficult because the constraints conflict. Distinctiveness pulls toward complexity; legibility at small sizes pulls toward simplicity. Trend awareness makes something feel current; longevity requires resisting exactly that. Resolving these tensions is craft, and it takes exploration rather than inspiration.

We design logos as systems rather than single marks. A primary lockup, a horizontal variant for constrained spaces, a standalone symbol for app icons and avatars, and a monochrome version for single-color reproduction. Each drawn deliberately rather than mechanically derived from the primary.

Every mark is tested where it will actually live: favicon size, app icon, embroidered, engraved, on a vehicle, in an email signature, against photography. Marks that look excellent in a presentation and fail in application are the most common outcome of an unrigorous process.

Business benefits

What logo design changes for you

The reasons this work earns its budget, stated as outcomes rather than features.

Designed as a family

Primary, horizontal, stacked, symbol and monochrome variants, each drawn for its context rather than scaled from one master.

Tested in real application

Reviewed at favicon size, as an app icon, embroidered, on vehicles and over photography before anything is finalized.

Distinctive by intention

Competitive screening so the mark stands apart in your category rather than joining the visual consensus.

Built to last

Trend-aware without being trend-dependent, because a logo that dates in three years is a costly mistake.

Complete file delivery

Vector source, all raster sizes, favicon package, social profile crops and print-ready color specifications.

Usage rules included

Clear spacing, minimum size, color usage and misuse guidance so the mark is applied consistently by everyone.

Problems solved

If any of this sounds familiar

These are the situations clients describe in the first conversation, and what we do about each.

Our logo is unreadable as a favicon or app icon.

A dedicated symbol variant designed for small sizes rather than a shrunken version of a detailed primary mark.

The logo looks like three of our competitors'.

Competitive visual audit and deliberate divergence, which is often the highest-value part of the exercise.

Printers and vendors keep asking for files we do not have.

A complete delivery package covering every format and color space, with a clear guide for which to send where.

Everyone in the company uses a different version.

A defined variant set with usage rules and a shared asset library, so the correct file is the easiest one to find.

Our process

How we deliver it

Each stage has a defined output, so you always know what you are getting and when.
  1. 01

    Brief and research

Positioning, audience, competitive landscape and the practical contexts the mark must survive.

  2. 02

    Exploration

Broad conceptual exploration, narrowed to two or three directions worth developing properly.

  3. 03

    Refinement

The chosen direction drawn precisely — proportion, optical balance, spacing and curve quality resolved.

  4. 04

    Variant system

Horizontal, stacked, symbol and monochrome versions drawn for their contexts and tested at target sizes.

  5. 05

    Delivery

Full file package, favicon set, usage guidelines and a handover walkthrough.

Questions

Logo Design: common questions

The questions we are asked most about logo design, answered directly.

Two or three fully developed directions rather than ten thumbnails. Volume dilutes quality and turns selection into a taste vote instead of a strategic decision.
