Our story

Founded on a specific frustration

Two kinds of firm, both expensive, neither accountable for whether the work produced anything. Mova was an attempt to build the third kind.

In 2019 our founders were on opposite sides of the same problem. One had spent years in consulting, producing recommendations that were carefully researched, well presented, and frequently impossible for the client to implement. The other had spent years building software to specifications that were confidently wrong, delivered on time, and quietly abandoned within a year.

Both experiences pointed at the same structural gap. Strategy and execution were sold separately, by different firms, with the risk transferred at exactly the point where it mattered most. Nobody was accountable for the whole thing working.

The first three years were engineering

We started with custom software for operations-heavy businesses — logistics, manufacturing, healthcare administration. Unglamorous work with a hard constraint: it had to function at seven in the morning, every morning, for people whose day would be ruined if it did not.

That period set standards we have not relaxed since. Automated testing before it is convenient. Documentation written for the person who inherits the system. Deployment pipelines from the first commit. Clients who own their code and infrastructure outright, because a partnership that depends on lock-in is not a partnership.

Then clients started asking a harder question

“This works. Now who markets it?” We recommended agencies. The results were inconsistent, and when they were poor we shared the blame regardless — from the client’s perspective we had recommended them.

So we built the capability ourselves: SEO, paid media, lifecycle marketing, and later brand and design. Not because we wanted to be a full-service agency, but because the handoffs between specialists were where value kept disappearing.

AI, approached carefully

We shipped our first production language model system in 2023, and we were slower to market than firms who treated the technology as a marketing opportunity. That was deliberate. We established the discipline we still use — measured evaluation, human oversight proportional to the stakes, and a refusal to deploy anything we could not explain to a compliance officer.

It cost us some early work. It has since won us considerably more, particularly from clients in regulated industries who had already been through a vendor that promised faster.

What has not changed

The founding principle survives intact: advise honestly, build well, stay accountable for whether it worked. In practice that means turning down projects we could sell, telling clients when they do not need us, and reporting the months where the numbers did not move.

It is a slower way to grow a company. It is also why most of our revenue comes from clients who have worked with us before.

Timeline

The short version

  1. 2019

    Founded on a specific frustration

Mova started because our founders kept encountering the same split: strategy firms that produced recommendations nobody could implement, and development shops that built exactly what was specified without ever asking whether it would work. Both were expensive. Neither was accountable for the outcome.

  2. 2020

    Engineering-first foundations

The early work was custom software for operations-heavy businesses — logistics, manufacturing, healthcare administration. Unglamorous, high-stakes systems where the requirement was that it work at seven in the morning, every morning. That set our standards permanently.

  3. 2021

    Growth capability added deliberately

Clients kept asking who should market what we had built. Recommending others produced inconsistent results, so we built SEO, paid media and lifecycle capability in-house — under the same accountability as the engineering.

  4. 2022

    Brand and design brought inside

The gap between what a product could do and how it was presented kept undermining good work. Adding brand strategy, identity and interface design meant the whole chain — positioning through to shipped product — sat with one accountable team.

  5. 2023

    AI, applied conservatively

We built our first production language model systems and immediately established the discipline we still use: measured evaluation, human oversight where stakes justify it, and a refusal to deploy anything we could not explain to a compliance officer.

  6. 2025

    A full digital partner

Today Mova covers software, AI, cloud, data, brand, design and growth for US companies from Series A startups through mid-market and enterprise. The founding principle has not changed: advise honestly, build well, and stay accountable for whether it worked.

What we hold to

Six things we will not trade away

Say the true thing

Including when it costs us the sale, delays the timeline or contradicts what a client already decided. Candor is the whole basis of a partnership that lasts more than one project.

Ship something real, early

Working software in front of users beats a document about working software. Early delivery is how you find out whether the plan was right while it is still cheap to change.

Own the outcome, not the ticket

Delivering what was specified while knowing it will not work is a failure with good paperwork. If we see the problem, we raise it.

Leave it maintainable

Someone will inherit this — possibly us, possibly your team, possibly a stranger in four years. Write for them.

Respect the people using it

Accessibility, performance and clarity are not features to trade away. Someone on a five-year-old phone with a bad connection is still a customer.

Earn the next engagement

We do not use lock-in, hostage accounts or proprietary formats. Clients stay because leaving would be a worse decision, not a harder one.

Next step

If that sounds like the kind of partner you want

The next step is a conversation about what you are trying to move, not a capability deck.

No pitch deck. A 30-minute conversation about what you are trying to achieve.
